Reports are agog that all the parties are in search of a consensus candidate for the next Presidentship of the country. Whatever, be the choice, my only suggestion is that the final choice should not be based on the religion or caste to which the person belong to. ( As has happened in the cases of Mr KR Narayanan and Mr Abdul Kalam, in spite of their eminence otherwise! )
The one name that comes to my mind immediately is tat of Anna Hazare. He was able to ignite a fire in the minds of youngsters against the rampant corruption observed in the society now. Let us see how he can proceed with this once he occupies the highest office of the country. Like Mr Seshan who could show the country the powers of CEC, Mr Hazare may be able to demonstrate that the President is not a mere figure head of the country.
I am sure all the parties can agree to this name, for different reasons! The opposition because they have been actively supporting him during his crusade, though more to embarrass the government than to actually eradicate corruption. The ruling party can agree on the name because, this will ensure that they can take the steam out of the movement and reduce the embarrassment caused by it .
I hope this will lead to a healthy discussion on the selection
